This foreign-language film came to me at the picture lock stage and was completed remotely under a very tight deadline. I had approximately three weeks to help finish the audio post-production, as the film was being submitted to the Berlin International Film Festival and needed to meet the entry deadline.
I was recommended for the project by the supervising sound editor due to my ability to work effectively under this pressure while maintaining quality.
The film presented a number of challenges, largely due to the way it had been deliberately shot on location in Rwanda using a guerrilla-style approach. As a result, much of the production audio was difficult to use, and around 90% of the foley had to be recreated and carefully tracklaid.
Despite these challenges, the team worked efficiently to achieve a soundscape that felt authentic and grounded. The goal was realism - avoiding a polished Hollywood aesthetic - and staying true to the director’s vision of the film’s environment and atmosphere.
